Japanese artist Kentaro Okawara has a big heart and infectious smile that brings people together. His art reflects the love, joy, and fun he brings with him wherever he goes. His optimism and happiness connect people from all walks of life.
日本人アーティストの大河原健太郎は、人々を結びつける大きな心と、ついつられて微笑んでしまうような笑顔が魅力です。彼の芸術は、行く先々で彼がもたらす愛、喜び、そして楽しさを反映しています。彼は楽観主義と幸せな気分で、さまざまな立場の人々を結びつけます。
He loves to joke around with people. At his book signing at Fisk Gallery in Portland, he offered to sign his book for a customer. The guy asked, Are you the artist? Kentaro said, No. I don't know him. But I can sign his name for you. Kentaro smiled wide and his new friend laughed.

This is part of Kentaro's charm. He makes people laugh and brings them together at the same time. He's the kind of friend that you might not see for a long time, but when you do, it's like no time has passed at all.

Kentaro Okawara (born 1989) is a painter and sculptor based in Tokyo, Japan. He graduated from the College of Arts, Tokyo Polytechnic University. His main theme is love. His paintings and three-dimensional works are inspired by emotional experiences that spring from his daily life. His style emerged at an early age when he drew and exchanged postcards with his grandmother on a daily basis. His art now shows around the world. In addition, he is a children’s book illustrator, product designer, scenic designer for television, and has participated in live painting at music festivals.
大河原健太郎（1989年生まれ）は、東京在住の画家、彫刻家である。東京工芸大学卒業。主に愛をテーマとしている。彼の絵画や3D作品は、日常生活から湧き出る感情的な経験にインスピレーションを得ている。そのスタイルは、ほとんど毎日幼少期に祖母とやりとりした絵葉書にルーツを持ち、彼のアートは世界中で展示されている。そのほかにも、子供の絵本のイラストレーター、プロダクトのデザイナー、テレビ番組セットのデザイナーでもあり、音楽フェスでのライブペイントにも参加している。

Who were your early influences?
My grandmother and grandfather have always been into drawing. When I was between five and eight years old, my grandmother and I would send each other postcards almost every day. I still have a large stack of them at home. I see some of the same motifs I use now or the beginnings of them. In this postcard, you can see similarities to the way I draw flowers and houses. I also use many of the same colors. My grandmother appreciated me and my art. I loved making art for her then and I still love to make art for family and friends and everyone now. She showed me that making art is an expression of love.
（インタビュー者）幼少期に影響を受けたのは誰からですか？
祖母と祖父はいつも絵を描いてきました。私が5歳から8歳の時には、祖母と私はほぼ毎日お互いに葉書をやりとりしました。今もその絵葉書がたくさん家にあります。その絵葉書には私が今使っているのと同じモチーフやモチーフの始まりがいくつか見られます。この絵葉書では、私が描く花や家と似ているが見られます。また私は同じ色の多くを使います。祖母は私と私の芸術を高く評価してくれ、当時私は彼女のために芸術を作るのが好きでした。今でも家族や友達、そしてみんなのために芸術を作ることが大好きです。祖母がアートを生み出すことは愛の表現であることを教えてくれました。
Who were your other influences?
My family and friends had a big influence on me. In high school, I was into graffiti with some friends. You can see that in my art now. I love is to make my friends laugh. One time, I drew my teacher’s face, made a lot of copies and passed them around the school just to make my friends laugh.

When I was growing up, I began to realize that everyone has a different way of seeing and experiencing the world. I began to see that even though the world is big and complex, it is also very intertwined. It all comes down to the simplest and most important level which is connecting with people.
成長するにつれ、世界を見たり経験したりする方法が人によって違うことに気づき始めました。世界は大きくて複雑ですが、密接に絡み合っています。なので、最終的には人々がお互いに結びつくというシンプルなレベルに行き着くのです。

When did you know you wanted to be an artist?
Ever since I was a child, I've loved making things and I drew and painted every day. But when I really wanted to become an artist was the moment I saw an art book about Basquiat during my second year at university.

子供の頃からずっとです。物を作ったり、絵を描いたりするのが好きで、毎日絵を描いていましたが、本当にアーティストになりたいと思ったのは、大学2年の時にバスキアについての画集を見た瞬間です。
When I saw his art, I suddenly understood that I'd been setting restrictions on myself which I had not even realized until that moment. I was not free at all. I was very shocked to see his art. Seeing his work, it was like everything I wanted to express was there. Basquiat set me free.
彼の芸術を見た瞬間、自分自身で無意識のうちに自分に制約を課していたことに気づきました。全然自由ではなかったのです。彼の芸術を見てとてもショックを受けました。彼の作品には、私が表現したかったすべてがありました。 バスキアが私を制約から解放してくれたのです。

What inspires you now?
The feeling of everyday experiences. For example, the way a child walks down the street or a friend's expression. I find small things in life that make me happy. Like seeing a dog barking or a person laughing. I want to remember the feeling I get and make them into sketches. These sketches don't always make it into my paintings, but the feeling and ideas often become the foundation of my paintings where the motifs are more symbolic.
（インタビュー者）何からインスピレーションを受けますか？
日常の体験における感覚です。たとえば、街で見る子供の動きや、友達の表情です。日常生活の些細なことで幸せを感じます。犬が吠えているのを見たり、笑っている人を見たりした時です。そのとき感じた気持ちを覚えておくためにてスケッチします。これらのスケッチは必ずしも自分の絵画の中に活かされるわけではありませんが、その感覚やアイデアが私の絵画の基盤となることが多く、モチーフはより象徴的なものです。
I also like to capture the specific experiences that I have with my friends. Recently I asked a friend how she pees when she wears a bathing suit. She told me that she pulls it to the side. It made me laugh so hard I had to make art out of that. Little things like this make me laugh and inspire me.
自分の友達と特定の事柄を経験する瞬間を捉えるのが好きです。最近ある女友達に水着を着ているときどうやって用を足すのかたずねました。その友達は水着を横に引っ張るのよ、と言いました。それがおかしくて大笑いしたので、それをアートにせざるをえませんでした。そのような些細なことが笑いをもたらし、インスピレーションを与えてくれます。
Also, I am inspired daily by many great artists and musicians.
また、多くの偉大なアーティストやミュージシャンからも日々インスピレーションを受けています。
What is your art about?
I think it's LOVE and connecting with each other.

What do you want your art to give to people?
I want to express for others the important things I feel in my daily life and the emotions I don't want to forget. I want to continue to create a space and a world that can be shared across cultures and generations.
